Elina Svitolina v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

Sakkari leads 2-1 head to head. The Ukrainian won at the Wimbledon in 2019, but has lost the next two in San Jose and Ostrava in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Svitolina Wins Another Three-Set Thriller

After being pushed to three by Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the first round, Elina Svitolina found herself in trouble again in the second round on Monday, but the Ukrainian found a way to win once again and move into the third round.

Facing Alja Tomljanovic in the second round, the World No. 6 found herself a set down after the Aussie had three breaks of serves against the Ukrainian’s two. Tomljanovic then went up a break  early in the second and looked set to advance before Svitolina began her comeback. She broke the Aussie twice to force the deciding set and then got two early breaks in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Refusing to give up, Tomljanovic got both the breaks back to send the game on serve at 4-4. But Svitolina edged ahead the very next game and then held on to the lead for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in two hours and 21 minutes.

A quarterfinalist at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, Svitolina had needed three hours and six minutes to beat Siegemund 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the first round.

Overall, the Ukrainian hasn’t had the best of seasons by her standards, making just two semifinal appearances.

Sakkari Powers Past Stojanovic

While Svitolina has found the going tough, it’s been a breeze for Sakkari so far in the tournament.

The Greek defeated Estonia’s Annett Kontaveit 7-5, 6-2 in the first round and then demolished Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic  6-1, 6-2 in the second round on Monday.

Sakkari didn’t face a break point in the match and converted four of nine to power past the Serbian in 68 minutes.

The World No. 19 has been exceptionally good this season but hasn’t been able to make a third career final. The 26-year-old has a 22-11 record this year, which includes four semifinals, including her first at a major at Roland Garros and her first in Miami.

Svitolina v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

While Svitolina is higher ranked and also seeded higher, she struggled to get past her first two opponents, spending over five hours on court. She will need time to recover. Sakkari on the other hand has been very dominant and will be more confident of the two in the next round. Expect the Greek to edge past the Ukrainian in three.
