Taylor Fritz v Steve Johnson Head to Head

Fritz and Johnson have been involved in five career head-to-head meetings, with the former holding a slender 3-2 lead. Their meetings have come across surfaces and the most recent fixture involving the two was the quarter-final of Los Cabos Open which saw Fritz prevail in straight sets.

Fritz Powers Past Donskoy

Currently sitting at No.42 in singles, Fritz picked up from where he left off at Los Cabos to open his Atlanta campaign with a thumping win over Russian Evgeny Donskoy.

Firing 59 winners to his opponent’s 42, Fritz bossed the Russian in both sets to eventually come through 6-3, 6-4.

The 23-year-old American recorded his strongest ad farthest run this season in the tournament prior, at Los Cabos, reaching the semifinals on the back of impressive wins over Ukrainian Illya Marchenko and compatriot Johnson.

While his win in the Los Cabos opener was a close affair that went to three sets, his 6-4, 6-4 takedown of Johnson in the quarter-final would give him a world of belief and confidence going into the fresh clash against his compatriot.

Fritz, who came within a set of taking down defending champion Novak Djokovic at this year’s Australian Open and fell agonizingly close, also had the better of Johnson, albeit in five sets, in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships this year.

Johnson Overcomes Popyrin Challenge

Continuing with the hard-court form that saw him reach the quarter-finals at Los Cabos, Johnson was clinical and near-flawless in the manner in which he tamed tricky Australian Alexei Popyrin in his Atlanta opener on Wednesday.

While the opening set saw a close fight and was eventually decided in a tiebreak which fell in favor of the 31-year-old American, the second turned out to be a stroll for Johnson.

With the first set already in his kitty at 7-6 (7-4), the 80th-ranked Johnson pushed for a decisive break against the Australian in the second.

His persistence was rewarded as he broke the Australian and held onto his lead to close out a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win.

The manner and margin of victory should stand him in good stead as he bids to go level with Fritz on the head-to-head count.

Fritz v Johnson Prediction and Tip

It’s too close to call whenever the two meet and one suspects it will be no different this time. While Fritz will be keen to land his second career Tour title and get results going in his favor ahead of the US Open, Johnson will be equally determined to get his own back on the former. Recent history favors Fritz, but don’t rule out Johnson putting one past his compatriot
