Thompson Fights Past Gojowczyk

Thompson, who recovered from a mid-match slump against South African Lloyd Harris to prevail in three sets in his tournament opener, faced a stiff battle against German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk in the last 16.

The opening set went to a tiebreak as the players couldn’t be separated at the end of the regulation 12 games. However, it was the Australian who had his nose ahead with a mini-break in the tiebreak and held on to his advantage to claim the first set 7-6 (8-6).

Currently ranked 63rd in singles, Thompson went hard at his opponent in the quest of a decisive break and his persistence paid off as the German lost serve.

There was no comeback road for Gojowczyk thereafter as the 27-year-old Australian pressed on with his advantage and closed out a straight-set win.

Thompson, who came into the Atlanta Open on the back of a quarter-final finish at Los Cabos, faces a tricky opponent in Nakashima as he bids to extend his run in the quest of his maiden Tour title.

Th0ugh facing a qualifier in compatriot Trent Bryde in his Atlanta opener, Nakashima had to battle hard to seal his passage to the last-16.

Nakashima won the opening set at a canter but ran into a more determined Bryde in the second. The qualifier forced the match into a decider after winning the second-set tiebreak 7-5.

However, Nakashima played his way back into the game in the third and profiting from a service break, he closed out a three-set win, setting up an absorbing last-16 battle with Canadian Milos Raonic.

After being outgunned in the opening set by Raonic who looked to have hit top form, lashing winners off his handle and producing big serves, the American fought back to win the second.

The final set veered to a tiebreak which saw the American running up a lead and holding on to it to eventually prevail in three sets.

Thompson v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

On a high after claiming a big scalp in the form of Raonic, Nakashima should fancy going past Thompson in the quarter-final. However, Thompson will be keen to avenge his Los Cabos defeat and the fans can expect a fierce contest.
