Taylor Fritz v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

Fritz and Opeka have been involved in five career head-to-head battles, with the former holding a comfortable 4-1 lead against his big-serving compatriot.

Fritz Fights Past Johnson

Picking up from his semifinal finish at Los Cabos, Taylor Fritz opened his Atlanta campaign with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russian Evgeny Donskoy, setting up another duel with compatriot Steve Johnson.

Johnson, determined to put one past Fritz after coming out on the losing side at Los Cabos, bagged the opening set in a tiebreak. However, the latter found his range against the eighth seed thereafter, running out a 6-4 winner in the second set.

The deciding set was an even more lopsided affair as Fritz was literally all over Johnson, breaking him twice and closing out a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-1 win.

Currently placed 42nd in singles, Fritz came within a match of lifting his second career title at Los Cabos but couldn’t clear the final hurdle as he went down in straight sets against Briton Cameron Norrie.

Earlier, the American outlasted Johnson in an absorbing five-set battle to reach the third round of this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Though he fought hard against Alexander Zverev, even taking the opening set off the German, the current World No.5 romped home in four sets.

Opelka Pips Qualifier Fratangelo

Keen to return to his menacing best on the preferred hard court after an encouraging run on dirt this year, Reilly Opelka faced a qualifier in compatriot Bjorn Fratangelo.

However, the match was anything but a stroll for the big-serving giant as Fratangelo not only stayed even in the contest but also took the opening set to a tiebreak.

However, Opelka relied on his big serves to pip his unheralded opponent 7-3 in the first-set tiebreak.

The second set panned out similarly, as Fratangelo, hurting from his close defeat in the opening set, fought valiantly and pushed 22-year-old Opelka into another tiebreak.

However, just has he did in the first set, the big American had the last laugh this time as well as, producing booming aces to get out of tight corners, Opelka won the second-set tiebreak to eventually close out a straight-set win.

Fritz v Opelka Prediction and Tip

While Fritz holds the proverbial wood over his big-serving compatriot in head-to-head battles, Opelka could be a handful this time, especially if he can get his serves going. All in all, it should be an exciting contest.
