Fritz Comes Through Opelka Epic

Taylor Fritz opened his Atlanta campaign with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russian Evgeny Donskoy, setting up another duel with compatriot Steve Johnson.

Johnson, determined to put one past Fritz after coming out on the losing side at Los Cabos last week, bagged the opening set in a tiebreak. However, the latter found his range against the eighth seed thereafter, running out a 6-4 winner in the second set. The next set was all Taylor Fritz, as he emerged victorious 6-1 in the decider.

In an all-American quarter-final, Fritz prevailed against Reilly Opelka in just under three hours in a match that saw a total of 50 aces, three tie-breaks and no breaks of serve. While Opelka did well to save two match points in the second set and take it to a decider, Fritz edged it out in a deciding set breaker.

Fritz is in his fourth semi-final of the season, and his second in consecutive weeks as he fell short of the title last week in Los Cabos against Cameron Norrie, will be hoping to go further this week around.

Isner Prevails In Tight Three-Setter

Five-time winner here in Atlanta, American John Isner continued his quest to salvage his season coming off a straight sets win over fellow American Jack Sock.

Up against Aussie Chris O’Connell who had upset number two seed Jannik Sinner,  Isner started as a strong favorite and looked well on course after winning the first set in a tiebreak 7-5. The Aussie continued his strong run thereafter hanging in to take the second set to another tiebreak and prevailing 7-3.

The experienced American played a strong deciding set breaking O’Connell once and serving strong to close out the match 6-4 in the third and set up a final four encounter with yet another fellow American in Fritz.

Fritz v Isner Prediction and Tip

Both players have come through hard fought quarter-finals and it depends on who is better on the given day, especially on serve. Expect another big serving encounter with Fritz inching through in a decider.
