Petra Martic v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

Martic has a 2-1 lead from their three previous meetings. Neither of those three meetings have needed a third set.

Sevastova’s win came in the Bucharest Open final in 2018, while Martic won at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open.

Martic Will Aim for Consistency

After a quiet start to the season, Martic found her footing in Rome, reaching the semifinals of the Italian Open, and then made it to the quarterfinals in Parma the following week, suggesting that she was back in form.

But having delivered on clay she couldn’t maintain the same level of consistency on grass, which pegged her back once again. The inconsistent run is reflected in her rankings. She began the year as World No. 18, but has dipped to the current ranking of No. 33 in the world.

The 30-year-old Croatian hasn’t played since her second round defeat to Romania’s Irina Camelia Begu at Wimbledon. So she could be a touch rusty, but would hope to shake it off quickly  against the Latvian, who has found her lost form this year but is coming off a first-round defeat in Tokyo.

While clay is her preferred surface, Martic does have a decent record on hard courts as well. Two of her four WTA finals have come on the surface, but she is yet to win a hard-court event. She won her only career title on the clay court of Istanbul in 2019. Martic will be playing in the main draw at San Jose for the first time.

Sevastova Has Looked in Decent Touch in 2021

She had a torrid time in 2020, winning just two of her competitive matches, but the former World no. 11 seems to have found her touch back in 2021.

Sevastova heads to San Jose with a 20-15 record from all matches this year and that includes runs to the quarterfinals in Adelaide, Miami and Eastbourne. She couldn’t get going at the Olympics though, after being handed a first-round defeat France’s Fiona Ferro. Sevastova had got off to a flying start taking the first set with ease but the Frenchwoman came back strongly to dash the Latvian’s Olympic dreams.

A player who delivers on all surfaces, the 31-year-old’s best results have come at the U.S. Open, where she reached the semifinals in 2018 and was a quarterfinalist twice, in 2016 and 2017.

A four-time winner on the tour, Sevastova has featured in eight finals, but only one of those were on hard courts, when she finished runner-up to Caroline Wozniacki at the 2018 China Open.

Martic v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

This will be another close contest. Numbers suggest that Sevastova has a better record on hard courts than the Croatian and being in better form this year, there is a good chance of her toppling the sixth seed.
