Ajla Tomljanovic v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the tour. Tomljanovic won their only ITF level meeting in WACO in 2017.

Tomljanovic Looking to Build on Her Wimbledon Showing

Over the last two years, things had been pretty frustrating for the 28-year-old Australian. She would start a tournament well, but wouldn’t have the mental strength to survive pressure games. Not going past the Round of 16 in any of the tournaments since the Zhengzhou Open in 2019 was a reflection of just that.

Failing to deal with nerves had become a recurring issue but Tomljanovic kept working on the mental aspect of the game. And all that came to fruition at the Wimbledon, where she exhibited  her mental strength in reaching her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.

She won nervy matches against Alize Cornet and Jelena Ostapenko and then dominated the contest against the rising Emma Raducanu, despite playing against the crowd, before the Briton was unfortunately forced to retire due to breathing issues.

Now, the Aussie, ranked 51st in the world, will aim to build on that momentum.

Her transition from grass to hard courts didn’t quite go as she would have liked, with Elina Svitolina ending her Olympics dreams with a come-from-behind three-set win in the second round.

Tomljanovic, would however, take the positives from her experience in Tokyo to San Jose, where she was a quarterfinalist in 2018. She had also made it to the last eight in 2015, when the tournament used to be played at Stanford.

Anisimova Yet to Make Her Presence Felt Since 2019

She became the first player born in the 21st century to reach the quarterfinals and the semifinals of the French Open in 2019, but since then Amanda Anisimova hasn’t quite have the same impact on the tour. Let’s not forget, though, she is just 19 and needs just one good tournament to turn things around once again.

This season, the American has made it to two quarterfinals on clay in Parma and Hamburg but has lacked the consistency that saw her reach the No. 21 in the rankings in 2019.

Can she add to the sole title she won in Bogota in 2019? San Jose offers tough competition but she tends to do well here. She reached the Round of 16 as a qualifier on her debut in 2018 and was a quarterfinalist in 2019. Not in the best of forms this year, but Anisimova will be hoping for a good start.

Ajla Tomljanovic v Amanda Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Tomljanovic will have the edge in this contest. Anisimova will make things difficult and may force a deciding set, but the Aussie should edge through.
