Elena Rybakina v Claire Liu Head to Head

Rybakina won their previous meeting at the Wimbledon earlier this year.

Deciding Sets Spelling Doom for Rybakina

She has been terrific over the last couple of months but needs to figure out how to win close out three-set matches.

It happened against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the French Open quarterfinal, then against Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of Wimbledon; it happened again, against Belinda Bencic in the semifinal in Tokyo and once again, against Elina Svitolina in the bronze medal match at the Olympics. Each time the match went the distance, nerves got the better of Rybakina.

Out of the 13 three-setters she has played this year, the Kazakh has won just four – a stat that’s becoming a real cause of concern. Last year as well, the 22-year-old constantly succumbed to the pressures of the deciding set.

At 22, these are still early days for the Kazakh, and she will eventually find the formula to succeed in the third set, but for now the deciding sets are spelling doom for her.

Ranked 20th in the world, Rybakina reached five finals in 2020, winning in Hobart to claim her second carer title but finishing runner-up in the other four tournaments. She was slow off the blocks this year, but impressive displays in the Grand Slams and the Olympics over the last two months has injected new life to her game and now she will be hoping to keep the momentum going in North America.

Liu Edges Past Yastremska

Continuing her steady progress in 2021, America’s Claire Liu knocked out World No. 46 Dayana Yastremska in the first round of the San Jose Open on Tuesday.

The World No. 108 needed two hours and 20 minutes to beat the Ukrainian 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Liu converted six of 11 beak points and saved nine of 14 to close out the edge-of -the-seat battle.

The 21-year-old who won the Wimbledon girls’ singles title in 2017, has played in four ITF finals this year, winning two of them.

A second round appearance at Wimbledon, two quarterfinals in WTA 125K events and a run to the second round in Charleston have been some of the highlights for Liu this year.

Elena Rybakina v Claire Liu Prediction and Tip

Rybakina will no doubt be the favourite to advance into the next round, but the longer the contest goes, Liu will start sensing an opportunity. Expect Rybakina to win in straight sets though.
