Elise Mertens v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head

The two players have quite a bit of history behind them with Mladenovic leading Mertens by 3-2.

They last met in Cincinnati Open last year where Mertens won in three sets. The duo have also locked horns on the doubles circuit a few times with Mladenovic, owing to her superior pedigree there, prevailing on a majority of the occasions.

Mertens Hoping for a Solid Run in San Jose

Generally speaking, Elise Mertens has fared quite well in the US Open Series – she had back to back quarterfinal appearances at the Flushing Meadows in 2019-2020 and a similar run in the Cincinnati Open through the years.

Additionally, the 25-year-old Belgian has got an impressive track record on hard courts this season – she won the Gippsland Trophy in what was her first tournament of the year and followed it with a fourth-round appearance in the Australian Open and a semifinal run in WTA Dubai.

Later in the year, Mertens also reached the final in the Istanbul Cup (losing to Sorana Cirstea in the final). These consistent results have allowed her to cement her place in the top 20.

Following the Olympics debacle where she fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opener, Mertens arrived in the States with the hope of turning her form around. She has enjoyed a bye into the second round in the Silicon Valley Classic.

Mladenovic Starts Well

Kristina Mladenovic moved past the Korean Han Na-Lae in her first-round match of the Silicon Valley Classic with 6-4, 6-4.

This marks the first time since the Viking Classic Birmingham that Mladenovic has reached the second round on the tour. Back then, she fell to Anastasia Potapova and by the looks of it, she may be in store for another early-round defeat here.

Most of Mladenovic’s performance this season, at least on the singles circuit, is marked by such exits. The best she has done is reaching the third round in the Australian Open where she walked away with 130 ranking points – the most she has picked up in a tournament in 2021.

Her Olympics campaign also ended quite early as lost to Paula Badosa in the first round.

Mertens v Mladenovic Prediction and Tip

Both ladies are coming off a similar spell on the tour but Mertens, owing to superior form, will start as the favourite to win. The match may be pushed to three sets but the Belgian should prevail at the end.
