Alex de Minaur v Steve Johnson Head to Head

They have met on three occasions with De Minaur leading 2-1. While the Aussie won on the hard courts of Brisbane and here at the Citi Open in 2018, the American prevailed in a five setter at the 2019 Wimbledon,

2020 US Open Quarter-Finalist Hoping For Strong American Hard Court Season

A five time winner on the tour, this has been a mixed season for Alex de Minaur of Australia.

He started the year strong winning the title in Antalya at the start of the season but did not have the best of runs through the indoor and hard court season leading into clay, which was also a mixed swing for the Aussie.

De Minaur looked good during the short grass stint making the quarter-finals at Stuttgart, semis at Queens and winning the ATP 250 at Eastbourne before an opening round loss at Wimbledon to rising American Sebastian Korda.

A 2020 US Open quarter-finalist, De Minaur will be hoping for better returns on the North American hard court portion of the tour, and will like to get off to a strong start making a deep run this week in the US capital.

Johnson Seeking Rhythm and Consistency

Once ranked just outside the top 20 in the world in the ATP rankings, American Steve Johnson is now ranked 82nd in the world and has been looking to get back into rhythm this season.

After poor performances at the Mexico and Miami Opens with opening round losses, Johnson moved to the ATP Challenger Tour before returning for the French Open and Wimbledon.  Neither were too successful for the American as he had a third round loss on the clay and a second round loss on the grass.

Johnson has played every week since Wimbledon trying to get the playing and winning habit back.  It was an opening round loss at the Hall of Fame in Newport, but he made the quarter-finals at Cabos and round of 32 last week in Atlanta.

Incidentally, he has run into compatriot Taylor Fritz three times dating back to Wimbledon last month, losing out on all occasions.

Johnson looked good in his opener here at the Citi Open against Ramkumar Ramanathan from India and will be hoping to continue the strong form and make a deep run this week.

De Minaur v Johnson  Prediction and Tip

While De Minaur is looking for a more consistent year than he has had thus far, American Steve Johnson is continuing to attempt to revive his career as he holds on to his ranking within the top 100 in the world. Expect a good contest but the younger legs of the Aussie should see him through in a three-setter.
