Millman Looking for His Best Form in 2021

Millman broke his long duck on the ATP tour by finally winning his first senior title in Kazakhstan last November.`

But if he was hoping that would be a prelude to more success in 2021 he has been disappointed so far, after a mediocre season by his usual standards.

Just back from Tokyo where he was representing Australia, he reached the second round there before losing to the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina.

And that has proved to be his level so far this year, the deepest he has gone into any tournament being a third round appearance in Munich on clay, before losing to the Norwegian Casper Ruud.

He benefitted from a first-round bye in Washington.

Qualifier Ymer Produces First-Round Upset

The elder of the two Ymer brothers had to qualify for Washington, beating two Americans, Bjorn Fratangelo, and Jeffrey John Wolf, both in  straight sets, to earn his place in the main draw.

He was the clear underdog going into his match with the Australian Jordan Thompson, a man ranked more than 100 places in him in the world. But he produced some of his best tennis to upset the odds and progress.

All that though seemed improbable when he was broken early in the first set, and when Thompson broke him again to wrap up the set, the Australian seemed in total control.

However, the match then became scrappy, which suited Ymer and serves began to be dropped on both sides of the net. Breaks were swapped, and again, and then for a third time, before Thompson was broken once more.

Ymer was given the chance to serve to level the match, and he eventually took it.

The Swede then found himself a double break-up in the third set. Thompson retrieved one of them to drop his serve once more.

Serving for the match, Ymer had three match points, could not convert them and was broken in turn.

However, the Swede earned four more match points next game and he finally made one count.

Millman v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Ymer has already beaten one Australian in Washington, but lightning rarely strikes twice. Millman may not be in the best of recent form, but his all-round game should be too strong for the Swede.
