Isner Captured Sixth Atlanta Title

John Isner will arrive at the Rogers Cup on the back of an unprecedented sixth title win at the Atlanta Open. Victory over an in-form Brandon Nakashima puts Isner on par with the Big 3 as the only active players to win one event six or more times.

It was also the American’s 16th tour-level trophy, and his first since taking home the Newport title in 2019. Incidentally, it was also Isner’s 16th match win of 2021 and a streak of sunshine to a season that threatened to become a downer.

By the time the claycourt season started, the 36-year-old had won just four matches and skipped the Australian Open due to tighter pandemic restrictions Down Under. But he has since managed to get his season back on track and could have a fruitful summer in North America.

Considering Isner’s longevity of playing top-tier tennis, it is a striking stat that he has only managed to play the Rogers Cup four times in his career. His best showing remains the semifinal he attained in 2012, and has only managed to win a combined two matches in his three subsequent visits.

Can he find top gear when he opens up against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina?

Davidovich Fokina Returns After Olympics Exit

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina made a third-round exit at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, losing to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets. And he did not make a major contribution in doubles where he was also bundled out in the first round alongside Pablo Carreno Busta.

But on a more positive note, Spain managed to attain a podium finish at the tennis tournament with Carreno Busta mastering the upset over Djokovic in the bronze medal match.

Davidovich Fokina, like many of his compatriots, took a week’s break to recharge his batteries in order to prepare for an engrossing summer of hard court tennis in North America.

Last season, the flamboyant Spaniard reached the fourth round of the US Open, beating the likes of Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie. He will be defending a substantial number of ranking points in the latter part of the season. That means he will be keen to chalk up any points he can gain before the big battleground at Flushing Meadows.
