Ugo Humbert v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Humbert Reached Olympics Quarterfinals

Ugo Humbert has had a mediocre season by his own high standards. And case in point is that he is 18-15 for the season, and only managed to swing a negative win-loss record to a positive one in the past month and a half. Prior to the grass-court season, he had lost five consecutive matches.

The Frenchman was a long shot to win the Halle title, but defied the odds and an impressive list of opponents including Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Andrey Rublev to snatch his third career title and his first on the lawns.

Although he lost in a dramatic five-set first-round match at Wimbledon to Nick Kyrgios, Humbert was in fine fettle at the Olympics where he shocked Greece’s World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to the quarterfinals. However, Tsitsipas was nowhere near full strength after picking up a leg injury at the end of the second set, and the French lefty grasped the chance with both hands.

Humbert fell short in his bid to compete for a medal match after losing a close three-set match to Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.

Sonego Stunned By Basilashvili in Tokyo

Unlike Humber, Lorenzo Sonego had a torrid time in the sweltering conditions in Tokyo. He struggled immensely against the feisty Japanese Taro Daniel in his first round, where he needed to save a match point to stay in the tournament.

Sonego’s big serve dug hit out of the melee, serving 14 aces and winning 71% first-serve points. But he was beaten by Nikoloz Basilashvili – the World No. 41 – in three sets in the next round. The Italian also fell in the second round in doubles alongside countryman Lorenzo Musetti.

The 26-year-old returns to tour-level tennis sitting at a career-high ranking of World No. 26. It has been a fine season for the man from Torino. He sits 17th in the ATP Race and with a mathematical chance of reaching the top eight spots for the ATP Finals which will be held for the first time in his home city.

Sonego is set to make his debut at the Canadian Open on Monday.

Humbert v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Humbert’s form at the Olympics should put him in good stead to combat Sonego’s counterpunching skills. The Frenchman is as aggressive and powerful as they come, and has enough tools at his disposal to subdue the Italian in lengthy exchanges.
