Jan-Lennard Struff v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

The pair have played twice before, and each has won one match. Fognini won their semi-final on the clay of Munich in 2014, but Struff was victorious two years later in Monaco, also on clay.

Munich Finalist Struff

Struff reached his first main singles final in May, losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in straight sets in Munich.

That remains the closest he has come to success on the senior tour in singles, although he has won three doubles titles, most recently in Rotterdam last February with partner Henri Kontinen.

A month after his exploits in Bavaria, Struff reached the fourth round of the French Open for the second time in his career, eventually losing to the Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

Results have been harder to come by since then, and he has not been further than the second round in any event he altered,.

Like Fognini, he was chosen to represent his country at the Olympics, but had the misfortune to be drawn against Novak Djokovic in the second round, losing in straight sets.

This will be his first match since that defeat.

Fognini Back in America After Tokyo

It has been two years since Fognini won the last and the most prestigious of his nine career titles, the Monte Carlo Masters.

Primarily known as a clay court player, he has enjoyed sone success in clay court tournaments, but never on American soil. The closest he came was three years ago when he won the tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico.

The Italian began the year well, by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open before losing to Rafael Nadal, and repeated the feat in Monte Carlo.

He then got to the third round of both the French Open and Wimbledon, despite his publicly expressed aversion to grass.

Most recently he was playing for his country in the Olympics where he reached the third round before losing to Daniil Medvedev.

Struff v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Fognini will start the favourite, although Struff is a dangerous opponent with a  powerful serve which the Italian will need to deal with if he is to progress.
