Rogers, Making Great Strides on the Tour

28-year-old Shelby Rogers started the year as World N0. 60 – at the moment, she is currently ranked #40 which tells us about the progress she has made as a player this season.

Most of her promising runs have come in hard court tournaments, notably at the start of the year. She reached the quarterfinal in the Yarra Valley Classic and Adelaide International, and the fourth-round in the Australian Open, defeating the likes of Petra Martic, Johanna Konta, and Anett Kontaveit.

In the European swing through Madrid Open, Italian Open, Strasbourg Open, and French Open, Rogers’ form took a sharp hit as she failed to move past the early rounds. On grass, she found some solace with a third-round run in Wimbledon where she moved past Maria Sakkari and Samantha Stosur.

Most recently, the American featured in the WTA San Jose last week where she lost to the eventual champion Danielle Collins in the opener. That said, Rogers was the quarterfinalist in the US Open last year and has certainly got the goods to deliver here in the Canadian Open.

Potapova, Breezes Through Qualifiers

World No. 100 Anastasia Potapova started her journey in Montreal over the weekend as a qualifier, defeating Layne Sleeth and the number two seed Kristina Mladenovic.

So far this season, the 20-year-old has had a rather muted time on the tour with a handful of impressive results. Her best run came in WTA Dubai where she reached the quarterfinal, upsetting Madison Keys and Olympic gold winner Belinda Bencic on the way. A few weeks before that, the young Russian had also made it to the third round in the Australian Open.

As for Potapova’s recent results on the tour, she fell in the opening round of the Wimbledon while last week in San Jose, she was beaten in the final qualifying round by Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove.
