Jabeur, Hoping to Emulate her Recent Success

Ons Jabeur is on cloud nine at the moment – currently ranked World No. 22 (her best singles ranking yet), she is now looking to replicate her recent results in the American swing.

With a win-loss tally of 33-13, Jabeur has proven herself as one of the most consistent performers on the tour this season. Following the round of 16 appearances in WTA Abu Dhabi, Australian Open, WTA Dubai, and Miami Open, the 26-year-old took it up a notch in the clay swing.

Her terrific performances in Charleston – semifinal in WTA 500 and runner-up in WTA 250 – set the stage for the grass season where she won her first singles title in Birmingham Classic. A couple of weeks later, Jabeur also reached the quarterfinal in Wimbledon after moving past Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza, and Iga Swiatek.

Even though she couldn’t quite deliver a similar performance in the Tokyo Olympics (succumbing to Carla Suarez Navarro in the first round), Jabeur is certainly primed for a good run here in Montreal.

Burel, Posing a Definite Threat

Considering that at the beginning of the year, 20-year-old Clara Burel was ranked outside the top 200, it suffices to say that the current World No. 101 has had a pretty remarkable season herself.

She has alternated between ITF and WTA circuits and has found a fair bit of success in both. In the former, she made it to three singles finals in ITF Poitiers, Oeiras, and Saint-Gaudens (going the distance in the last). On the WTA Tour, she reached her maiden singles final in the Lausanne Open, losing to Tamara Zidansek in the final.

Here in Montreal, Burel started as a qualifier and navigated both of her rounds successfully to reach the main draw.

Jabeur v Burel Prediction and Tip

Jabeur will start this match as the heavy favourite on account of her superior form and experience. Burel, although promising and talented, still lacks the experience and that may ultimately prove to be her downfall in this opening match. However, she is more than capable of making life difficult for the Tunisian.
