Hubert Hurkacz v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

Hurkacz has a 100% winning record against Kei Nishikori, winning each of their previous two meetings before this in three sets. Both matches came in the 2019 season with the Pole winning in Dubai and Indian Wells.

Hurkacz Could Be A Force In Toronto

Hubert Hurkacz will return to North America for the first time since he basked on the Miami sunshine in early April. The Pole captured his maiden Masters 1000 title, defeating a trio of heavyweights and a handful of upstarts. If you factor in his success in Delray Beach at the start of the season, then Hurkacz is an impressive 10-0 in these parts.

Now the big test awaits for the 24-year-old who would want to translate his good form to the hardcourt Slam. Hurkacz’s triumphant 2021 does not simply encapsulate his form on hard courts alone.

He was outstanding at the Wimbledon Championships where he registered wins over Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer en route to the semifinals.

Currently, he is on the cusp of cracking the top-10 in the not-too-distant future, and should he continue to duplicate this sizzling run of results it could very well happen this week.

Making his debut appearance in the main draw, Hurkacz received an opening-round bye but will face a stern test when he takes on a resurgent Kei Nishikori.

Nishikori Downs Kecmanovic in Three

Japans’s Kei Nishikori defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets, and in the process backed up his recent semifinal showing at the Citi Open.

Nishikori won 6-4 6-7 6-2 in two hours and 10 minutes, playing fluid groundstrokes and penetrating shots to reach the second round. The 2016 finalist preserved his record of having not lost the first round of Canadian Masters despite only making three visits.

After a nip-and-tuck two sets, Nishikori raced well clear in the third when he took a commanding 4-0 lead. Although Kecmanovic managed to post a pair of games, the former World No. 4 was uncatchable.

The 31-year-old has now won eight of his past 10 matches and enters the reckoning as one of the most dangerous floaters in the final Grand Slam of 2021.

Nishikori had slipped into his lowest ATP ranking in more than a decade and elected to play last week’s event in Washington in order to earn sufficient ranking points for an upswing. His efforts were rewarded when he reached his first semifinal in over two years in D.C. and now sits at No. 55.

Hurkacz v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is 10-0 on hard courts of North America this season, but this will be a very difficult assignment so early in the tournament. We reckon Nishikori has played himself into form during the past fortnight and should be a solid pick to upset the Pole.
