Andreescu Overcomes Tenacious Dart in Opener

Under the tutelage of Sven Groeneveld (on a trial basis), Bianca Andreescu looked for a head start when she took to the court on Wednesday evening under the lights. Still defending champion after last year’s cancelation of the Canadian Open, the fresh-faced 21-year-old overcame the inspired challenge of Harriet Dart – the British qualifier who masterminded a major upset by knocking out a local favorite in the form of Leylah Fernandez in the first round.

Andreescu, as she admitted in her pre-tournament presser, wanted to get back in the zone. She began with a flurry of winners and took the first set 6-1 in 36 minutes. Dart was unable to protect her serve in the set where she was broken three times.

But the 25-year-old Brit managed to shock the large pocket of Canadian fans when she raced to take a 3-1 lead in the second set and kept consolidating to level the match. Andreescu did not wilt and dominated the third set with two more breaks of serve. Dart was playing a top-10 player for just the fourth time, and the gulf of experience and rankings was a major factor in the end. Overall, the Canadian second seed fired an impressive 35 winners.

How will Andreescu cope when she takes on the talented and dexterous hands of Ons Jabeur?

Jabeur Outlasts San Jose Finalist Kasatkina

In another thrilling three-set match under the lights, Ons Jabeur outlasted Daria Kasatkina in two hours and 10 minutes. Jabeur had lost the first set 2-6 in 33 minutes, but she had plenty of gas in the tank when the match went the distance. Kasatkina’s legs eventually gave up after her exploits in San Jose.

In a match between two players of equal court craft and guile, Jabeur won her second straight match over the new World No. 27 (following her victory in the Birmingham final) and levelled the head-to-head between the pair at two-wins apiece.

Jabeur overcame a slow start in the second set and ended up winning six of the last seven games to force a third set. It was the Tunisian who steered clear in the decider, garnering two service breaks to lead 5-2. Despite failing to serve for the match at the first opportunity, she made no mistakes in wrapping up victory when handed a second bite of the cherry.

The Tunisian saved a whopping 13 breakpoints, which ultimately proved decisive to beat an in-form Kasatkina who recently re-entered the world’s top-30.

Andreescu v Jabeur Prediction and Tip

Both Jabeur and Andreescu are fine shot-makers with an eye for the spectacular shot. Their is very little to separate these two as the odds suggest, and we are backing this match to tread the games market.
