Karolina Pliskova v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head

Karolina Pliskova leads 2-0, winning both matches on the hard courts. First up in Indian Wells in 2018, and then in the second round of Wuhan in 2019 – both in straight sets.

Pliskova Pushed to the Brink by Vekic

Karolina Pliskova needed to be her on toes to defeat Donna Vekic in her opening match in Montreal. The Croat had authored an upset win over Aryna Sabalenka at the Tokyo Olympics and looked laser-focused in crashing Alison Van Uytnvanck in her first outing here.

Given that Pliskova had beaten Vekic quite easily in her previous two matches in Grand Slams (at French Open and Wimbledon), she entered the contests as a big favorite. The Wimbledon finalist needed two-and-half hours to advance past the unseeded Croatian this time.

She dropped the first set against the run of play after Vekic earned a decisive break in the ninth game.

Pliskova improved immensely in the second set where she served six aces, and won 76% first-serves (up from 57% in the first set), and saved all four break points she faced. Eventually, she closed out the second set after 40 minutes.

In the third set, it was a close tussle with both players exchanging breaks early on. The tiebreak would decide it, and Pliskova who had a batter conversion of winners particularly on her power-packed forehand established a cushion that Vekic could not quite overturn.

Anisimova Records Second Straight Main Draw Win

Anisimova recorded another impressive win as she looks to turn her fortunes around in the second half of the 2021 season. The young American has endured a tumultuous year in which she had failed to register double-digit wins on arrival to Canada. Recently, the 19-year-old made quarterfinal showings in Bad Homburg and Parma.

And after navigating her way from qualifiers, she has now won fourth straight matches to book her spot in the Round of 16 at a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time this season. Her 6-3 6-3 dismissal of Oceane Dodin saw Anisimova record 72% of first serves points on the board, and manufactured 13 breakpoints (converting six). The Frenchwoman’s 12 double-faults proved a major setback in her efforts to keep up with Anisimova’s big-hitting.

Anisimova’s year began behind schedule at the ITF event in Orlando towards the end of February. She tested positive for coronavirus at the start of the season and ill-effects aftermath were evident as she struggled for form.

Can she earn one of the biggest wins of her fledgling career when she takes on the former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova?

Pliskova v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Pliskova has beaten Anisimova in straight sets in each of their previous two matches in the series. But Montreal has not been a happy hunting ground for the Czech and she struggled mightily against Donna Vekic on Wednesday. Given Anisimova’s renaissance, we reckon the young American is primed this time to push the Wimbledon finalist.
