Gael Monfils v John Isner Head to Head

There is a rich vein of rivalry between Monfils and Isner, with the duo having faced off 12 times before this between 2007 and 2019. Monfils leads 7-5 having won four of their previous five matches.

All of that doesn’t count for too much though given the change in the playing dynamics for both players since the pandemic hit.

First Successive Wins for Monfils in a While

The pandemic hit a few tennis players harder than it did the others. Monfils has been one of those who have struggled really hard since returning to the sport and wins have been few and far between.

In fact, before coming into this competition in Toronto, Monfils had played in 14 tournaments including the Olympics earlier this month since the pandemic break ended. And not in one of them did he win successive matches.

Toronto has changed that for him.

After a first round bye, Monfils came back from a set down to overcome John Millman but more vitally it was in the third round that the Frenchman really shone. He overcame the 2/5 favourite Frances Tiafoe in straight sets, taming him 6-1, 7-6 (2) to set up this meeting with Isner.

And while Isner would be a different kettle of fish altogether, Monfils will know he has a chance after regaining some of his confidence.

Isner Makes it Eight Wins in a Row

For someone who struggled through most of the previous season and has plummeted from eighth in the world to his current ranking of 30th, Isner has shown some solid form in recent times.

And by defeating Andrey Rublev in the third round on Thursday, he made it his eighth win in a row – a string of victories that includes a title win at Atlanta.

Having gone into his previous match against Rublev as an underdog at 6/4 odds, Isner used his booming serve to counter his Russian opponent.

In a match lasting an hour and 44 minutes, Isner used a familiar route of making it to the quarterfinal – he slammed 20 aces, saved all the four break-points he faced and broke his opponent once to win 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Against Monfils, things could get slightly easier for this current version of Isner and a semifinal looks nearly certain.

Monfils v Isner Prediction and Tip

Isner starts off a heavy favourite in this and we believe he should continue with his usual template to come through here. Monfils might push him a tad but Isner to win in the end.
