Daniil Medvedev v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at Wimbledon earlier this season when Medvedev was stunned by Hurkacz in a five-setter. That was a fourth round encounter.

Medvedev Dodges the Duckworth Bullet

After a first round bye and a fighting second round win over Alexander Bublik, Medvedev finally got into his groove when he wasted no time getting past James Duckworth in the third.

Medvedev was on court for only an hour and nine minutes as he got past the Aussie 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last eight.

It took Duckworth some time to find his bearings but by then, Medvedev had already raced through the opening set and taken a 5-1 lead in the second. The Russian dropped his serve as he looked to serve out the match but did not waste the second opportunity he had to do so.

A quarterfinalist at Tokyo, Medvedev will now hope to go past that mark here in Canada, having also now recorded his best showing at this competition.

Hurkacz Keeps Up Good Form

There was a first round bye and a second round walkover for Hurkacz, which meant he went into his third round encounter against Nikoloz Basilashvili with a bit of rustiness.

And Basilashvili looked to have take advantage of that by overcoming an early break in the first set, saving two set-points on his own serve, missing two of his own set-points before clinching the opening set in a tie-breaker.

Hurkacz retaliated early in the second and third sets with a break apiece and then held on to his own serves with much ease till very late in the match. The Pole saved a break-point on his penultimate serving and then came back from 0-40 down to seal off the match in the 10th game of the third.

Can he now take the attack to his opponent, the way he had done at Wimbledon?

Medvedev v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip

While Hurkacz’s form and confidence from having beaten Medvedev earlier this year we believe the Russian should edge out his opponent and make it to the semifinal.
