Medvedev Gets His Wimbledon Revenge

Knocked out by Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round at Wimbledon last month, Medvedev was out to get his revenge in the quarterfinal in Toronto, but found himself in trouble as the Pole sealed the first set with double break of serve.

The Russian clawed his way back into the contest, taking the second set in the tiebreak and then won a second tiebreak to seal the two-hour-and-18-minute contest 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).

Hurkacz, who wasn’t broken in the entire match, had better numbers winning 86% first-serve points, 64% second-serve points and 52% total points, but it was the World No. 2 who won the most crucial moments in the match to eliminate the Wimbledon semifinalist. Medvedev served 23 aces on his way to a 35th win of the season.

The 2019 Canadian Open runner-up is now a step away from another final. He began this year’s Toronto campaign with a 4-6, 6-3 6-4 comeback win over Alexander Bublik in the Round of 32 and then hustled past Australia’s James Duckworth 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

On Saturday, he will be aiming to reach a fourth singles final this year, having captured the Marseille and Mallorca crowns and finished runner-up at the Australian Open.

Having begun his Toronto challenge with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Isner defeated 13th seed Cristian Garin  4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round and fourth seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the Round of 16.
