Maria Sakkari v Angelique Kerber Head to Head

While Kerber holds a 2-1 lead over Sakkari, it was the Greek who got the last laugh. They met in the WTA 500 Grampians Trophy in January where Sakkari won 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semis.

Kerber, Playing in her First Game Since Wimbledon

Angelique Kerber opened the 2021 WTA Tour with a string of early-round losses. Through the Australian Open series and the Middle East Swing, the 33-year-old German’s best run came in the Grampians Trophy where she reached the quarterfinal.

It was a similar story in the Miami Open, WTA Stuttgart, and the subsequent clay court events. In fact, it wasn’t until the grass swing that Kerber began her resurgence. Certainly fitting, given that it is on this surface that she has hit her stride in the past.

A title run in the Bad Homburg Open saw Kerber lift her first winner trophy since the 2018 Wimbledon. The following week, Kerber reached the semifinal at the SW19 where she fell to Ashleigh Barty.

The World No. 21 will now look to keep up the same performance here in the States. While a fixture against someone of Sakkari’s calibre doesn’t make it easy, the fact that she is a two-time runner-up here in the Cincinnati Open should help her out.

Sakkari, a Two-time Quarterfinalist in Cinci

Maria Sakkari has reached the quarterfinal twice in the Cincinnati Open through 2019 and 2020. Given that she is now the World No. 18 – her best singles ranking yet – there is a real chance that she can go further this time around.

But if we are to look at her recent form, it paints a different picture. Following a second-round defeat in Wimbledon, she lost in the Round of 16 in the Olympics while last week, she fell in the third round in the Canadian Open. The number 11 seed lost to Victoria Azarenka in three sets with the final one going to a tie-break – Sakkari lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(2).

On the whole, Sakkari’s year has been quite terrific – she reached the semifinal in four big-ticket tournaments of WTA Abu Dhabi, Grampians Trophy, Miami Open, and the French Open. Over the course of these events, she also defeated many top players like Naomi Osaka, Iga Swiatek, Elise Mertens, and Garbine Muguruza.

Sakkari v Kerber Prediction and Tip

Sakkari has proven herself to be a formidable opponent on multiple occasions. Kerber is certainly in for a tough fight here but given her experience and superior pedigree, she has the goods to walk out with a win.

All in all, expect a good game of tennis.
