Daniil Medvedev v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

The players have met four times and Medvedev leads the head-to-head 3-1. Opelka’s only win was when he upset defending champion Medvedev at the 2020 St. Petersburg Open. This year, they met in the round of 32 at the French Open and it was a comfortable win for the Russian.

Medvedev Powers Past Isner

Knocked out by Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round at Wimbledon last month, Medvedev was out to get his revenge in the quarterfinal in Toronto, but found himself in trouble and barely squeezed through coming back to win the last two sets in tiebreaks.

Up against the in-form big serving American John Isner in the semi-finals, it looked like it was going to be an acid test for the top seed as Isner has been on a nine match winning streak, winning the Atlanta Open and looking invincible with the big serve this week on the hard courts.

Medvedev was dialed in from the start, reading the Isner serve well and serving well himself. An early break saw the Russian go up 2-1 and then another break followed as Medvedev closed the set 6-2.

Isner was starting to struggle somewhat physically in the second, and would need to serve strong to come back in the match. There was no drop in the Medvedev tempo as he broke early again in the second set and followed it with a nail in the coffin second break to close the match 6-2, 6-2.

Medvedev is in his fourth final of the year searching for his third ATP title of 2021 after Marseille and Mallorca, with his eyes on a fourth Masters 1000 title.

Opelka Continues Dream Week Run

Reilly Opelka is in the midst of one of the best weeks of his tennis career as he qualified for his first ever Masters 1000 final.

Starting the week pulling off a big win against Nick Kyrgios, Opelka followed it with a convincing win against former world number three Grigor Dimitrov.

A hard fought three set win in a final set tiebreak followed against in-form South African Lloyd Harris, and then a straight set win against Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut.

Playing Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final who Opelka called the second best player in the world after Novak Djokovic at the moment, the American came back after losing the opening set in a tiebreak to equalize the match in another breaker.

Just when it looked like Tsitsipas was pressurizing the Opelka serve, the American turned it around to break Tsitsipas and serve out the set 6-4 for a place in his first ever Masters 1000 final on the back of a very convincing week.

Medvedev v Opelka Prediction and Tip

Opelka has had a phenomenal week notching up some very big wins, but he runs into Medvedev who is peaking at the right time and is a very strong factor on these hard courts.

Expect Medvedev to win his fourth Masters 1000 title in two tight sets.
