Badosa Coming off Surprise Marino Loss

This year has been a standout year for Spain’s Paula Badosa where she has really announced herself on the WTA circuit. Currently ranked 31st in the WTA rankings, Badosa has significantly improved her ranking throughout 2021 and reached a career-high of 29 just last month. However, her stay in Montreal was short-lived and she was surprisingly beaten by Canada’s Marino 1-6 7-5 6-4.

Paula had an incredibly impressive clay-court season, reaching the semi-final in Madrid, before losing out 6-4 6-3 to world-number-1 Ashleigh Barty. During her Madrid run she recorded impressive victories against Sevastova and Bencic and won the hearts of the home crowd.

The 23-year-old then travelled to Belgrade where she took home the trophy defeating Konjuh in the final 6-2 2-0 before the Croat was forced to retire.

Badosa’s impressive form continued in Paris, where she reached the semi-finals, eventually losing to Zidansesk 8-6 in the third set in a 2 hour 29 thriller which entertained the Paris crowd.

Badosa kicks of her Cincinnati campaign against Petra Martic, who sits just 3 places below her in the WTA rankings, probing there is little between these two competitors. Badosa will have to find her best tennis if she wishes to advance to the next round.

Martic Desperately Seeks momentum

Martic has definitely has better years on the WTA circuit, as she continues to struggle to find her best form on the match court.

The 30-year-olds most notable tournament run this year came in Rome, where she reached the semi-finals, recording impressive wins against reputable players such as Rogers, Podoroska, and Pegula before eventually losing out to Karolina Pliskova 6-1 3-6 6-2.

Her Rome run aside, Martic has failed to consistently string good performances together, and has failed to win back-to-back matches since reaching the quarterfinal of Parma, back in May where she fell at the hands of Wang 7-5 in the third.

The tennis gods have not dealt Petra a nice draw on the American hard courts either, as she faces an in-form Paula Badosa. Martic will have to play her best tennis to give herself a chance, but a key shot is going to be her serve, if she fails to serve well Badosa will be presented with lots of opportunities to make the Croat’s service games difficult.

Badosa v Martic Prediction and Tip

A highly anticipated encounter between two top-35 players, however, based on current form it is likely that Badosa will advance to the next round.
