Yulia Putintseva v Zhang Shuai Head to Head

Puintseva and Shuai have been involved in two career, head-to-head meetings, with both winning one match apiece. Interestingly, their last meeting came in the opening round of the Cincinnati Masters last year, with Putintseva coming through in straight sets.

Putintseva Lost Canadian Open Opener

Coming into the Canadian Open on the back of a quarter-final finish at the Silicon Valley Classic and a title-run at the Hungarian Open, the event prior, Putintseva drew Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in the opening round.

The 26-year-old from Kazakhstan seemed to be poised for a comfortable win and a passage to the third round as she took the opening set at a canter.

However, the Russian came roaring back into contention, winning the second set by a commanding margin and taking the match to a decider.

With a spring in her step and belief surging in her system, the Russian went with the momentum in the deciding set and opened up a clear lead before closing out a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win.

Though she has an opportunity to recover from the Montreal setback by starting her Cincinnati campaign on a winning note, she opens against an opponent who has an experience of taming her before.

As keen as Putintseva is to get back to winning ways at the prestigious event, she will have to be at her best against an opponent equally determined to get back in the lead on head-to-head count.

Shuai Pulled Out against Konta Last Week

Currently ranked 51st in singles, Shuai’s campaign at Canadian Open was ended in rather unfortunate circumstances as she conceded her opening-round tie to experienced British star Johanna Konta.

The 32-year-old Chinese had taken the first set 6-4 and was trailing 2-5 in the second when she decided to pull out.

Though she has a chance to set her Montreal disappointment aside and return to winning ways in Cincinnati, she will open her Masters campaign against an opponent who has had a run of wins in recent weeks.

Prior to pulling out sore in Montreal, Shuai recorded a quarter-final finish at the Silicon Valley Classic which was preceded by a run to the semifinal at Palermo.

Hence, there’s enough in her recent run of results to derive confidence from ahead of her opening-round outing against Putintseva.

Putintseva v Shuai Prediction and Tip

Though tied on head-to-head count, recent run of results puts Putintseva slightly ahead of Shuai going into this opening-round encounter. However, the Chinese has beaten the Kazakh star before and could do so again.

Tip: Putintseva to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
