Jessica Pegula v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, and Pegula leads their head-to-head series by three matches to two. Pegula won their two matches on clay and also beat the Italian in the final in Washington in 2019.

Giorgi won in Cancun in 2011 in an ITF event and, more pertinently, defeated Pegula in the semi-finals of Montreal a few days ago, winning in three sets.

2020 Quarter-Finalist Pegula

Last year, Pegula reached the quarter-finals of this tournament,  a performance that kickstarted her rise back up the rankings again.

She began 2021 strongly, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, her best ever showing in a Grand Slam.

Pegula then reached the semi-finals in Doha, and the quarter-finals in Dubai in successive weeks, before switching to clay, where her best result came in the Italian Open, where she reached the last eight.

Picked for the Olympics by the USA, she lost in the first round to the eventual gold medallist, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

Last week in  Montreal, she beat the French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Ons Jabeur, before eventually losing to Giorgi.

Montreal Winner Giorgi

Giorgi comes into this match having just won her third senior career title, beating Karolina Pliskova in straight sets to win the Canadian Open. It was her first final in two years, and it had been three years since she last lifted a trophy at the Linz Open in Austria.

During her run in Montreal, she claimed the scalps of Elise Mertens, Petra Kvitova and Coco Gauff, without dropping a set to any of them, and that continued the good form she had shown at the Olympics, where she reached the quarter-finals before losing to Elina Svitolina.

And she was also a semi-finalist in Eastbourne, having first come through the qualifying competition.

A distinctive figure on court, she wears clothes custom-made by her mother.

Pegula v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Although Giorgi won their semi-final in Montreal a few days ago, her victory in the Canadian Open will have taken a lot out of her emotionally and physically, and tournament winners often suffer a reaction in their next event.

That means that Pegula has chance for swift avenge for that defeat.
