Lorenzo Sonego v Carlos Alcaraz Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 26-year old Italian, and the Spaniard, , who is eight years younger.

Sonego has been enjoying a successful season, having won his second senior career title on home soil in Sardinia, and then, showing his adaptability, reaching the fianl of Eastbourne on grass, before ore eventually losing to Alex de Minaur.

He then reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, his best ever showing at a Grand Slam, before eventually losing to Roger Federer.

As a result of those performances, he has now climbed to his highest ever world ranking.

This will be his third appearance in the Cincinnati Masters, but he has yet to progress beyond the first round stage.

Since Wimbledon, he represented Italy at the Olympics, losing in the second round to the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, and, last week in Toronto, he suffered an opening round defeat at the hands of Ugo Humbert of France.

Alcaraz’s Stellar Season

It has been a stellar year for the teenage Spaniard, who qualified for the Australian Open in February, making him the youngest participant in the event, and then at the Madrid Open, he broke Rafael Nadal’s record as the youngest match winner in that tournament.

Victory in the Challenger event in Portugal to break into the top 100, but he was not content to stop there. He reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at the French Open and then won his maiden senior title in Umag, beating Richard Gasquet in the final.

Now his challenge is to develop into an all-court player away from his natural, preferred surface of clay.

This is his debut in Cincinnati and he has made the main draw after beating both Thiago Monteiro of Brazil and Ilya Ivashka of Belarus, both in straight sets, in qualifying.

Sonego has far more experience than the teenage Spaniard, but the form that Alcaraz is in this year makes him an opponent to be feared. He could be ready to add another scalp to his growing list.
