Sinner Eases Past Delbonis

The World no. 15 gave himself a perfect gift on his 20th birthday as he knocked out Federico Delbonis in the first round on his Cincinnati debut.

The Italian needed an hour and 39 minutes to beat the Argentine 6-2, 7-5 on Monday.

Sinner, who captured his second title of the year and a first ATP 500 title of his career in Washington this month, improved to 30-15 after the win on Monday. He had begun the year by winning the Melbourne-2 title and reached his first Masters 1000 final in Miami.

Against Delbonis, Sinner had a scrappy start, having to save three break points in his first service game. However, with the game safely in his bag, he took charge of the contest, breaking his opponent three times in the set, while getting broken just once.

He started the second with a break, but Delbonis put the game back on serve at 4-4. Sinner broke again for a 6-5 lead and then served out the match for a straight sets win.

Isner Reaches Aces Milestone

John Isner served up 26 aces in a come-from-behind win over Cameron Norrie in the first round, becoming only the second player after Ivo Karlovic to go past 13,000 aces.

Having conceded the only break of the first set, Isner edged out Norrie in the second set tiebreak and then got the sole break in the last set to claim the two-hour contest 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The 36-year-old, who moved up four places to No. 26 in the rankings this week, has been in red-hot form over the last few weeks, reaching the semifinals in Los Cabos, winning the title in Atlanta and making the final four in Canada.

Isner now has 13,004 aces, second only to Karlovic’s tally of 13,709. Expect 2013 Cincinnati runner-up and 2017 semifinalist to close the gap even further on Wednesday.
