Shelby Rogers v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Bencic leads their heads to head series by three matches to one.

Rogers won their first meeting in an ITF event in 2013, but Bencic avenged that defeat the same year.  The Swiss woman then beat Rogers in the final in Beijing in 2014, and in Mallorca five years later when the American was forced to retire from their match with injury.

Rogers Benefits from Collins’s Retirement

This is not only the first time that Rogers, who is at a career high ranking, has made it to the second round in Cincinnati, but also the first time that she has even entered the main draw in the tournament.

On this occasion, her ranking spared her the necessity of having to qualify for the tournament, something she has failed to do in the past.

Instead, she faced compatriot Danielle Collins in the first round on Tuesday, and was able to progress as her opponent had to retire due to injury.

At that point she was leading. Having taken the first set with a solitary break, which she then consolidated.

Collins dropped her serve at the start of the second set and only two more games were played before she decided she could no longer continue.

Olympic Gold Medallist Bencic

Bencic has just won the biggest title of her career, claiming the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, where she beat the Czech Marketa Vondrousova in the final in three sets.

And, for good measure as well, she also returned from Japan with a  silver medal as well, having finished rummers-up in the women’s doubles with partner Viktorija Golubic to the acclaimed Czech partnership of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

That Olympic win was her fifth senior WTA career title, and her first since winning the Kremlin Cup two years ago.

However, she had given hints that she was in the sort of form to start winning again, having reached the final in Berlin in grass in June before losing to Ludmila Samsonova.

She has not played since Tokyo and, having been given a first round by in Cincinnati, is well-rested.

Rogers v Bencic Prediction and Tip

Bencic has the better head-to-head record, is the higher ranked player, and comes into this match full of confident after her medal success in Tokyo. Provided that there are no hangovers from her triumphs there, she should win this match comfortably.
