Rublev Holds Off Monfils

The World No. 7 held off a spirited effort from Gael Monfils to march into the quarterfinals in Cincinnati with a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5) win.

Neither player could break serve in the first set, but they began the second by breaking each other twice. The humid conditions did seem to take a bit of toll on Monfils, but the Frenchman refused to surrender easily. Both would break each other a third time later in the second forcing another tiebreak. Rublev won crucial moments in the tiebreak to seal the contest and move into a second quarterfinal in Cincinnati.

In 2019, the Russian defeated Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer en route the last eight before going down to Daniil Medvedev.

On Wednesday, Rublev had come back from a set down to beat Marin Cilic 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

Improving his season record to 39-13, the fourth seed will be happy to have got back-to-back wins in Cincy after having failed to achieve that in his previous two tournaments. He was knocked out in the first round in Tokyo and in his second match in Toronto.

Resurgent Paire Continues to Advance

He was 2-17 in the first six months, but that seems like ages ago now. The World No. 50 has regained his lost touch and is looking hungry for more.

The Frenchman, who knocked out fifth seed Denis Shapovalov in the second round to claim his first top 10 win in four years, eliminated the in-form John Isner in the third round on Thursday.

In what was a third three-set win in three days, Paire needed two hours and 21 minutes to beat the Atlanta Open champion 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (2-7), 6-1.

Both players had a break each in the first but none in the second, with Paire squandering a match point at 4-5 (30-40). The American dominated the tiebreak to force the decider, but it was Paire who raced away with the third, breaking the big man thrice.

Paire won 87% first serve points and saved 8 of 9 break points in the contest, while converting four of 11. He had begun the Cincinnati campaign with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Miomir Kecmanovic and then eliminated Shapovalov with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory.

Rublev v Paire Prediction and Tip

With Paire returning to winning ways, he will pose a stiff challenge for Rublev, but the Russian seems to have found his footing in the tournament and will be the favourite to advance.
