Tsitsipas Edges Past Auger-Aliassime

He squandered two match points in the second set, but didn’t let the match slip away from his hands as he dominated the deciding set to see off Felix Auger Aliassime 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in two hours and 12 minutes on Friday and earn the 48th win of the season.

The second seed Tsitsipas is now one win away from a sixth final in 2021. The Greek won the titles in Monte-Carlo and Lyon, but finished runner-up in Acapulco, Barcelona and Roland Garros.

Last week, he missed out on a spot in the title clash in Toronto after being edged out by Reilly Opelka, but the World No. 3 will be hoping to win his semifinal on Saturday for a chance to claim a second Masters 1000 title.

On Friday, Tsitsipas had two match points at 6-2, 5-4 (40-15), but the Canadian, despite struggling with an injury, came back into the contest, forcing the decider.

Pegged back a bit, the Greek who broke the World No. 17 twice in the first set, broke him twice again in the third to get his fifth straight win over Auger-Aliassime and extend the head-to-head lead to 5-2.

A semifinalist in Cincinnati last year, Tsitsipas had begun his 2021 challenge with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Sebastian Korda in the second round and was forced to rally from a set down to beat Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round on Thursday.

Zverev Makes Quick Work of Ruud

He was 0-6 in Cincinnati prior to the start of the tournament, but fortunes have turned for the third seed in his seventh appearance as he reached the semifinals with a third consecutive straight sets win.

Dominating his quarterfinal against Casper Ruud on Friday, Zverev won 78% of his service points and 53% points while returning to clinch the contest 6-1, 6-3 in just under an hour. The win improved the World no. 5 to 36-11 this season and he will be aiming to reach a fourth final on Saturday.

The Olympic gold medallist hasn’t lost a final this season, having also won the Masters 1000 title in Madrid and an ATP 500 in Acapulco.

The German, who has featured in eight Masters 1000 finals previously, began his Cincinnati challenge with 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Lloyd Harris in the second round and then hustled past Guido Pella 6-2, 6-3 in the Rond of 16 on Thursday. He didn’t face a break point in either of the first two matches, but faced one against Ruud, which he failed to save.

Zverev broke Ruud thrice in the first set, but found himself a break down after the first game of the second. He got the break back at 2-3 and then got another for a 5-3 lead before closing out the contest.
