Nick Kyrgios v Andy Murray Head to Head

Murray leads 5-1, but Kyrgios won the last meeting at Queen’s in 2018.

Kyrgios On a Three-Match Losing Streak

World No. 81 Nick Kyrgios is coming into the tournament on the back of three consecutive defeats. The Australian, who hasn’t played much this year, began his North American swing with a first round win over Kevin Anderson in Atlanta, but a straight sets defeat to Cameron Norrie in the second round began a series of three defeats.

Kyrgios lost to Mackenzie McDonald in the first round in Washington and was dumped out of the Canadian Open by Reilly Opelka. Although that last match against Opelka was a close one, with the Australian taking the first set and competing well for most parts of the match.

He had a bit of an argument with the chair umpire during the second set, as he believed that Opelka’s feet touched the net while winning the ninth point of the tiebreak. But the umpire didn’t give in to his protests, and the match turned from that point on with Opelka taking control.

The 6-4, 6-7, 4-6 defeat ended Kyrgios’ Toronto challenge, but there were a lot of positives from that match which he would like to draw inspiration from on his Winston-Salem debut. The former World no. 13 is 7-6 this year, thanks to his third round finishes at Melbourne-2, Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Murray Receives Wild Card

After being added to the main draw of the U.S. Open, following Stan Wawrinka’s withdrawal, Murray has accepted wildcard for the Winston-Salem Open to better prepare for the Flushing Meadows tournament starting next week.

Ranked 105th in the world, the former No. 1 has played in the tournament just once before, losing to Tennys Sandgren in the opening round in 2019.

A three-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist, Murray is 5-5 on the tour this year. This week, he produced a quality performance against Richard Gasquet in the first round in Cincinnati but couldn’t keep the winning momentum going, falling to Hubert Hurkacz in the second round.

The 34-year-old Scot, who had hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019, missed the Australian and French Opens this year, but reached the Round of 32 of his home slam, before bowing out to Denis Shapovalov.

Kyrgios v Murray Prediction and Tip

It’s a clash between two unseeded players, but such is the stature of the two, that this will be the most eagerly awaited clashes in this year’s tournament. Expect an entertaining clash with the match going the distance.
