Tennys Sandgren v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on the hard courts of Auckland two years ago, Sandgren winning in straight sets.

Sandgren Looking for Form Ahead of Home Grand Slam

Although Sandgren has twice made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, his record in his home Grand Slam is less stellar, and one third round appearance in 2019 is the best he has managed.

He will be hoping to improve on that in New York in a week’s time, but knows that, to do so, he needs to find tome form first.

Since losing to Alexander Zverev in the second round of Wimbledon, he went out at the same stage in Newport, before he was selected for his country for the Tokyo Games. His Olympic experience was short-lived this time, though, as he was beaten in the first round by the eventual bronze medallist, Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Having got top the second round in Washington he was forced to pull out of his match with Lloyd Harris with an injury and, having skipped Toronto, failed to get beyond the qualifying competition in Cincinnati.

Cecchinato Struggles Away from Clay

Cecchinato reached his fifth senior ATP final in Parma in May, losing to Sebastian Korda. That, and his four previous finals was on clay. And that is where the strength of his game lies.

He is much less at home on a hard court. As his record in the US Open proves – he has only qualified for it twice before  and lost in the first round each time.

Nor has he chosen to prepare in optimum fashion for this year’s tournament either. Instead, he stayed in Europe competing in clay court events, most recently reaching the semi-final of a Challenger tournament in San Marino, before losing to the Dane Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune.

The last time he set foot on a hard court was in Dubai five months ago, where he was beaten in the first round by Richard Mannarino of France.

Sandgren v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Although Cecchinato is the higher ranked, the Italian is very much a clay court player. Sandgren might not be in the best of form right now, but, if he could have hand-picked an opponent to give him a boost ahead of the US Open, it would have been somebody like the Italian.
