The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 28-year old American, and the Argentine, who is three years older.

Giron Searching for Form Ahead of US Open

Giron has yet to taste success on the senior tour, although he has won both singles and challenger titles on the junior circuits.

Close to his highest ever world ranking, his form in 2021 was good enough to earn him a place in the US Olympic team, although that was in part due to the fact that several higher ranked players than him decided not to make the trip to Tokyo for one reason or another.

Treating this as a warm-up for his home Grand Slam in New York, where he has never been beyond the second round, his form since losing in the second round of the Olympics has not been the best.

He was beaten in the second round In Washington, lost in the qualifying competition in Toronto and, although he did qualify in Cincinnati last week, lost in the first round to Alexander Bublik.

Bagnis Much Prefers Clay

Bagnis, after several years of indifferent form, has broken back into the top 100 in the world in 2021, due to his exploits on his favourite surface of clay.

During the South American swing he reached the semi-finals in Cordoba, and the final in Europe, and on the European tour, he was a beaten finalist in a Challenger event in Qeiras, Portugal, and then last month, he won a tournament in Salzburg, Austria.

Like Giron, he was selected for his country for the Olympics, but lost in the first round to Dominic Koepfer of Germany.

Not known for his prowess on hard courts, he has not played any matches since, and his preparations for the US Open, where he has never gone beyond the opening round, looked undercooked.

Giron v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Giron will start a clear favourite against an opponent who tends not to fare so well away from his beloved clay.
