Sorana Cirstea v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

Cirstea won their only previous matchup in Prague in 2015.

Cirstea Looking To Regain Form in Chicago

In what’s been a resurgent year for the Romanian, Cirstea will be hoping for more success, with solid showings at the U.S. Open and its tune up this week in Chicago. Her North American season hasn’t started well though, as she comes into the WTA 250 in Chicago with a 1-2 record from the last two weeks.

Cirstea beat Alison Riske in the first round in Montreal but fell to Victoria Azarenka in the next. In Cincinnati, the 31-year-old could win just two games as she was overpowered by Jil Teichmann 2-6, 0-6 in the Round of 64.

Overall, Cirstea has played some exceptional tennis this year and brings a 20-13 record to the tournament. She had seen a constant decline in rankings over the last five years, but has reemerged as a potent force this season, winning her second career WTA title and a first in 13 years in Istanbul and reaching the final in Strasbourg before gong down to Barbora Krejcikova.

She also reached the fourth round at Roland Garros and the third round at Wimbledon, climbing back the rankings to No. 38.

Martincova Aims to Extend Prague Performance

Martincova is another player who has enjoyed loads of success this year. The 26-year-old Czech, who broke into the top 100 for the first time this year, is currently on a career-high ranking of No. 60. But like Crstea, she is yet to get going at the North American leg.

Having qualified for the main draw at the Canadian Open, Martincova went down Amanda Anisimova in the first round, retiring while trailing the American  1-6, 3-4. In Cincinnati, she couldn’t even make the main draw, falling to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first qualifying round.

The results were quite contrary to what was expected from the Czech, who had come into the North American season, having reached her first WTA final on the hard courts of Prague. She outplayed all her opponents en route to the final, but was outclassed by Krejcikova in the summit clash.

She didn’t have a great clay season, but was very good on grass, reaching the quarterfinals in Nottingham and Birmingham and the third round of the Wimbledon.

Cirstea v Martincova Prediction and Tip

With both players looking to find their footing on the hard courts of North America, expect an intriguing contest. Cirstea is the seeded player and also vastly experienced, which makes her a favourite, but expect Martincova to give her tough competition.
