Marin Cilic v Illya Ivashka Head to Head

Cilic and Ivashka have been involved in just one career, head-to-head meeting till date. The pair met in the third round of the indoor, hard court event at Marseille last year, with the Croatian coming through in three sets.

Cilic Failed to Clear Rublev Hurdle in Cincinnati

Coming into Cincinnati on the back of a third-round finish at the Canadian Open, Cilic was drawn to face Russian Aslan Karatsev in his opening clash at the Masters.

Currently ranked outside the Top-30 in singles, the former Grand Slam champion made short work of this year’s Australian Open semi-finalist, beating him in straight sets.

The victory saw him set up a third-round clash with another Russian and current World No.7 Andrey Rublev. However, the Croat did get off to a strong start against the spunky Russian but couldn’t keep up the momentum in the end.

Cilic took the opening set 7-5, but Rublev stormed back into the contest by taking the second in a breeze and the match in three sets. The eventual score-line stood 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the Russian’s favor.

The Croat, who had a remarkable grass court run this year, lifting the title at Stuttgart and finishing in the quarter-finals at the Queen’s Club Championships, would hope to return to winning ways in his Winston-Salem opener against Ivashka.

Though Cilic had the better of the young Belarussian in their only previous head-to-head meeting, he will be wary of the threat that Ivashka poses to his chances of reaching the third round.

Ivashka Beats Seppi in Opener

Having taken big strides up the ranking ladder to be placed at 63rd currently in singles, Ivashka arrived at the Winston-Salem Open after a disappointing run at the Cincinnati Masters where he failed to clear the qualifiers to reach the main draw.

Though he came to within one win of making it to the main draw after winning his opening qualifying clash against American Mitchell Krueger, the Belarussian came unstuck against Spanish teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz in his next.

The Spaniard handed an emphatic rout to Ivashka, ending his hopes of making a mark at the Masters.

If the Belarussian was hurting from his Cincinnati Masters, as he doubtlessly was, it did show in the manner in which he launched his campaign at the ongoing Winston-Salem Open.

Running into veteran Italian star Andreas Seppi, Ivashka trounced him in straight sets in a statement of intent to rivals going into the next round.

However, in Cilic, he faces a former Grand Slam champion who has had his measure before and can do so again. But, given the fearless approach that he brings into his matches, the Belarussian won’t be overawed by his opponent and would pull out every stop to get even on the head-to-head score this time.

Cilic v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

On ranking, experience and their previous head-to-head record, Cilic does start as favorite in this second-round clash against Ivashka. However, the Belarussian does have the game to silence the big guns and could have an upset up his sleeve this time.

Tip: Cilic to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
