Dan Evans had a good start to the season but seems to have lost way since, especially on the hard courts of North America.
Coming into Winston Salem, Evans had back-to-back opening-round exits at Washington Open, the Canadian Open as well as at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 last week.
However, Evans, ranked 27th in the world currently, hoped to return to winning ways as he began his campaign at the Winston-Salem Open against French veteran Lucas Pouille.
Pouille has not played much tennis of late, but looked in good touch coming into the match as he took the first set 6-3.
It took a spirited Evans comeback to take the second set 6-4 and just as the match equalized, Evans ran off in some confident touch for a 6-1 victory in the decider.
Winston-Salem presents the last opportunity for Evans to get in top shape and form ahead of the US Open and he would be hoping this is the beginning of a series of wins against Frenchmen with Richard Gasquet up next.

Gasquet In Search Of Hard Court Form
Starting out his season at the ATP Melbourne 250, Gasquet has featured in only three more tournaments on hard court surfaces since then.
Winner of nine ATP titles on the hard courts, it has not been a season to remember for the Frenchman.
A late start to the US Open Series, the former top ten player Gasquet, made it to the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters with wins over Fernando Verdasco and Jaume Munar. Unfortunately for him, that was the end of the road when he lost to Andy Murray in straight sets in the opener.
Gasquet did well to win a tough encounter against Egor Gerasimov in the round of 32, prevailing in two close tiebreaks. The Frenchman will hope for a better run this week to increase his confidence ahead of the US Open.
