Mikael Ymer v Max Purcell Head to Head

Both relatively new to professional men’s tennis, Ymer and Purcell have never been involved in a head-to-head contest before. However, both have drawn eyeballs with their wins in the previous rounds and should produce a fascinating duel.

Ymer Routs Ramos-Vinolas

Coming into the Winston-Salem Open on the back of two straight quarter-final finishes at the Swiss Open and the Austrian Open at Kitzbuhel, Ymer drew Stefano Travaglia of Italy in the first round.

The Swede, who is currently ranked inside the Top-100 in singles, bossed the opening exchanges and held onto his lead to take the first set 6-2.

However, the Italian, far from being down and out, staged a stirring fightback, flattening the Swede to clinch the second set 6-1.

It was Ymer who had the last laugh as he dominated the passage of play in the deciding set to close out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory. The win saw him set up a third-round battle with Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain.

Seeking to draw the right lessons from the previous round where he seemed to take his foot off the pedal after taking the opening set at a canter, the Swede kept up the pressure on the Spaniard even after winning the first set to romp home 6-3, 6-1.

Though he faces a relatively lightweight opponent in Australian Max Purcell, a qualifier in the ongoing tournament, Ymer knows he has to be at his best, building pressure on his opponent and not letting up till the last point is called.

Purcell Upsets Fellow Aussie Thompson

After failing to go past the qualifying rounds at his last two events — the Washington Open and the Canadian Open — Purcell had another chance to clear the qualifying hurdles and reach the main draw at the Winston-Salem Open.

Currently placed at a faraway 205th in singles, the Australian took down compatriot John-Patrick Smith in three sets in the first qualifying clash and followed it up with another three-set victory over American Denis Kudla to reach the main draw.

Opening his main tournament draw against another compatriot, and a more accomplished one at that, in Jordan Thompson, Purcell produced near-flawless tennis to close out a memorable 7-5, 6-4 win.

In Ymer, however, the 23-year-old Aussie faces a much higher-ranked opponent in decent form and will have to play pretty much out of his skin to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Ymer v Purcell Prediction and Tip

With more top-level wins under his belt and two quarter-final finishes in his last two tournaments, Ymer will be the favorite going into this last-16 clash. However, with nothing to lose and everything to gain, Purcell will push for an upset.

Tip: Ymer to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
