Tereza Martincova v Su-wei Hsieh Head to Head

Martincova and Hsieh have never been involved in any head-to-head clash before. However, both have reached the last-16 with contrasting victories and seem set to dish out a mouthwatering contest in their first-ever duel.

Martincova Fought Past Cirstea

After the high of a third-round finish at this year’s Wimbledon Championships and following it up with a runner-up run at the Prague Open, Martincova suffered a dip in her fortunes, going out in the opening round at the Canadian Open after coming down with an injury mid-match and failing to go past the qualifiers at the Cincinnati Masters.

Coming into the Masters with the disappointment of conceding her Montreal opener against Amanda Anisimova of the US via a walkover, the rising Czech star faced Elena Gabriela-Ruse of Romania in her opening qualifying tie at Cincinnati.

And, the 60th-ranked Martincova was no match for her opponent on the day as the Romanian took her down in straight sets to pour cold water on the Czech’s hopes of reaching the main draw.

Arriving in Chicago with the hurt of having failed to make the main draw at the Masters, Martincova went into her opening clash against veteran Romanian star Sorana Cirstea in the hope of snapping her streak of unflattering returns.

After going down tamely in the opening set, the 26-year-old Czech star fought back brilliantly to take the next two in a sensational win.

However, between Martincova and a place in the quarters stands resurgent Taiwanese Hsieh Su-wei, who took down five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in her opening clash.

Hsieh Upsets Venus in Chicago Opener

Arriving at the Cincinnati Masters on the back of a quarter-final finish at the Thoreau Open, her last tournament, Hsieh suffered the ignominy of crashing out in the opening round after losing to American teen sensation Coco Gauff.

Worse than the defeat itself was the manner of it as the 17-year-old American routed her 6-1, 6-2.

However, channeling the hurt and gathering motivation for her Chicago opener against Venus, the Taiwanese found form of the kind that saw her upset 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu at this year’s Australian Open.

Blending power with finesse, Hsieh upset the former champion in straight sets to announce her title credentials.

Though in the mood to gun for glory, the Taiwanese would do well not to relax against Martincova in her next. Though she hasn’t been at her best in recent matches, the Czech runner-up finish in Prague testifies to what she could accomplish on her day.

Martincova v Hsieh Prediction and Tip

Hsieh, on current form and especially after the takedown of Venus Williams, will start as favorite against Martincova. But the Czech could spring an upset if she plays anywhere close to the level that she showed in Prague.

Tip: Hsieh to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
