Sorribes Tormo Advances After Zvonareva Withdraws

Canadian Open quarterfinalist Sorribes Tormo got a free pass into the last eight in Cleveland after Russia’s Vera Zvonareva withdrew before the start of the second round contest.

The Spaniard had on Tuesday begun her Cleveland challenge with a 6-2, 6-1 drubbing of American Alexa Glatch in the opening round.

Ranked 43rd in the world, the 24-year-old has been extremely impressive this year. Besides winning her maiden career title in Guadalajara, Sorribes Tormo appeared in the semifinals in Monterrey and Hamburg and the quarterfinals of two WTA 1000 tournaments in Miami and Montreal.

She also stunned the World No. 1 Ashley Barty in the first round at the Olympics and will be looking to continue building on the stellar year by reaching a fourth semifinal on Thursday.

Zhang Into the Quarters After Tough Win

Bethanie Mattek-Sands would have seemed an easy opponent on paper, but the American didn’t make it all that easy for the Chinese, who had to battle for an hour and 50 minutes before finally seeing off the American veteran 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

The world No. 49 didn’t face a single break point in the match, but had 14 opportunities to break the American, who saved 12 of those chances. Winning 73% first-serve points, Zhang won 79% of her service points and 39% points while returning.

The 32-year-old Chinese, who had a terrible 1-9 start to the season, found form during the grass season, finishing runner-up in Nottingham.  She also reached the semifinal on clay in Pallermo and the quarterfinal on hard surface in San Jose earlier this month.

Zhang began her Cleveland challenge with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan on Monday.
