Victoria Azarenka v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

It will be a first meeting between the World No. 19 Azarenka and World No. 60 Martincova.

Former world No. 1 and two-time Australian Open champion will be making her 14th U.S. Open appearance.

The 18th seed, who lost to Serena Williams at the U.S. Open finals in 2012 and 2013, reached a third final at Flushing Meadows last year by beating Williams in the semis, but the title remained elusive as the Belarusian went down to Naomi Osaka, who overcame a first set deficit to clinch her second U.S. Open crown.

How far can the 32-year-old go this year? A 19-7 season record is an indication that she is in decent touch, but she hasn’t really got the results that she would have hoped for. A 21-time champion on the tour and a 19-time runner-up, Azarenka made it to two semis this year in Qatar and Berlin, but hasn’t been able to go that far in the other tournaments.

In her last two tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, Azarenka fell to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals in Montreal and to Ashleigh Barty in the Round of 16 in Cincinnati, where she was the defending champion.

A player of her stature will always be seen as a contender in big events, but realistically she may only reach as far as the third round as she could be meeting the ninth seed Garbine Muguruza at that stage.

Martincova Is 0-3 at the U.S. Open

Martincova rallied from a set down to beat Sorana Cirstea in the first round in Chicago this week and then repeated the pattern in the second round against Hsieh Su-wei.

She was taking to three once agains in the quarterfinals by Rebecca Peterson before eventually retiring while down 1-4. Was it cramps or some other issue, it wasn’t disclosed immediately, but it will be interesting to see if she can get fit in time for the U.S. Open.

This will be a fourth time that she will be featuring in the tournament, having made first round exits in all three of her previous appearances. However, she will be approaching this year’s event as a different player, who is much-improved and much confident, thanks to a great season.

It’s been a year of number of firsts for Martincova and the Czech just keeps impressing with every tournament. Ranked outside the top 100 at the start of the season, she has made considerable gains in the rankings, breaking into the top 100 for the first time and peaking to a career-high of No. 60, her current rank.

The 26-year-old reached her first-ever WTA final in Prague last month and has three quarterfinal finishes this year, including the one in Chicago this week.

Azarenka v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Given how Martincova has improved over the last one year, Azarenka will be wary of the Czech player, but with so much of experience behind her, the Belarusian will be the favourite to advance.
