Casper Ruud v Jo- Wilfried Tsonga Head to Head

The players have never met and this will be their first ever meeting on the tour.

Ruud Amidst Breakthrough Season

Casper Ruud, who reached a career-high ranking of 11 last week, has won four titles this year, all on clay, and heads to the US Open as the number eight seed with a 15-2 record from his last 17 completed matches.

Since Wimbledon, the Norwegian went on a winning spree, winning three consecutive titles at the Swedish Open, Swiss Open and the Austrian Open all on clay.

What will be more heartening for Ruud will be that he has also hit some good form on the North American hard courts recently.

He was a quarterfinalist in Toronto and repeated the fate the following week in Cincinnati defeating Reilly Opelka and Diego Schwartzman along the way.

While Ruud may not be one of the obvious favorites for the title, he is a very well rounded player with good attitude and discipline and will fancy his chances for a deep run flying under the radar.

Tsonga Looking For Last Hurrah?

Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga was a finalist at the 2008 Aussie Open and has made the semi-finals or better in majors on five occasions. But, at 36 years of age, it has not been the best of seasons at all for the Frenchman unfortunately.

Tsonga has been at the receiving end of some criticism for his lack of results and one can understand why. Since the start of the 2020 season, the Frenchman has played 11 main draw rounds and won just one, a win that came against a fellow veteran Feliciano Lopez.

Earlier this summer, Tsonga turned his attention to grass with an appearance at Eastbourne but managed just seven games in his defeat to Egor Gerasimov. The Frenchman played Wimbledon but lost the opener in five sets to rising Swede Mikail Ymer after being up two sets to one.

It has been a rapid decline in form and fitness for the veteran and what he has looked for is  a string of matches where he starts to get some of his rhythm back.  With no match practice since Wimbledon, Tsonga has an uphill task to even return to the rhythm of 2019 where he won two ATP titles, in the foreseeable future.

Ruud v Tsonga Prediction and Tip

This is a cross-generational clash in more ways than one. While Ruud is in the midst of his best year on the tour so far by a distance, Tsonga is in the twilight of his.

Expect a smooth win for Ruud against the rusty Tsonga in straight sets.
