Dan Evans v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and Evans won both matches. They both took place in 2017, on the hard courts of Sydney, and the clay of Barcelona, and both were three set encounters.

Evans Missed the Olympics with Covid

Evans has reached the third round of the US open three times, and will be hoping to at least emulate that achievement this year where he arrives as a seeded player and an established member of the world’s top thirty.

In February he won his first senior ATP final at the Murray River Open in Melbourne, and, in doubles, with partner Neal Skupski, he was runner-up in the Masters’ events in both Miami and Monte Carlo, the same event where he had beaten Novak Djokovic in the singles.

After reaching the third round of Wimbledon, he was due to play for Britain at the Olympics, in both singles and doubles, but was forced to pull out after contracting Covid.

He made his return to the tour in Washington, but lost in the first round there and also on Toronto and Cincinnati.

He did win his first match in Winston-Salem last week, beating Lucas Pouille, but then was beaten by another Frenchman in the form of Richard Gasquet.

Monteiro’s Poor Record in New York

The current Brazilian number one, Monteiro is appearing in the main draw in New York for the fourth time, but he has never previously got beyond the first round.

Like most South American players, his preferred surface is clay and that is where he has enjoyed the majority of his success on the junior tours, and he made two finals last year, winning in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, and losing in Forli, Italy.

In February he reached the second round of the Australian Open for the first time, but his form since then has been patchy, and, after losing in the second round of the French Open, he lost his next five matches, which included first-round defeats at Wimbledon and the Olympics.

However, he did give himself a mini-boost by reaching the third round in Winston-Salem last week, before losing to the American Frances Tiafoe.

Evans v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Evans, perhaps suffering from the after-effects of Covid, has not been in good form recently, but he is playing an opponent he has beaten twice before and who has never been beyond the first round in New York.

The Englishman should win this encounter.
