Lajovic Overcomes Tricky First Round Opponent

Lajovic, who is into the second round of the US open for the third time, was given a potentially tricky first round opponent in the shape of the world number 49, Benoît Paire from France, a man who had shown signs of finding his best form again in recent weeks.

However, it was the Serbian who started the stronger, breaking Paire in the sixth game and then consolidating on that to take the set.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, before Lajovic moved a break ahead again. He managed to get back on level terms but a further break enabled Lajovic to move two sets ahead.

Paire then regrouped in the third set, went a break up and then broke once more, suggesting he was finding a way back into the match.

Again, the duo swapped breaks at the start of the fourth set, before Paire saved another break point. His reprieve though was temporary, as he was broken again in his next service game.

The Frenchman saved two match points on his own serve, but Lajovic wrapped-up proceedings next game.

Gojowczyk Causes Minor Upset

Having come through three rounds of qualifying, few gave the German much of a chance of beating Ugo Humbert, the number 23 seed.

And, after the young Frenchman raced through the first set in just 22 minutes for the loss of just one game, then those sentiments appeared entirely justified.

But suddenly the German fought back, with two breaks of serve at the start of the second set enabling him to level the match, and two more in the third enabled him to take the lead.

When Humbert was broken early in the fourth set, things looked bleak for the world 26, but he broke back and then broke once more to take the match into a fifth set.

But midway through the fifth set Gojowczyk broke once more, and this time it proved to be decisive.

Humbert had run out of road and the German was through to the second round.

Lajovic v Gojowczyk Prediction and Tip

The Serb will start the favourite against the German qualifier because of his superior world ranking, but Gojowczyk has nothing to lose so he will try to enjoy the occasion.
