Kanepi Rebounds To Beat Putintseva

The World no. 70 fought back from a set down to knock out the 31st seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan and advance to the next round.

The Estonian got the first break of the opening set to go 2-1 up, but the joy was short-lived as Putintseva hit back, winning the next five games to take the set with ease.

Both exchanged two breaks of serve in the second taking the set to tie-break. The Estonian wrapped it up quickly and then raced past Putintseva in the third for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win in two hours and 19 minutes.

Playing her 14th U.S. Open, Kanepi last made a first round exit 11 years ago in 2009. A six-time major quarterfinalist, Kanepi reached the last eight at the New York major in 2010 and 2017. The last two editions witnessed her lose in the second round of the tournament. Will she face a hat-trick of Round of 64 defeats?

Fernandez Too Strong for Konjuh

At 18, Fernandez is exactly half of Kanepi’s age, but she can pack a punch against the experienced pro.

The Canadian began her U.S. Open challenge with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Croatia’s Ana Konjuh on Monday.

Fernandez converted four of seven break points while saving eight of 10. She also double faulted just thrice in the match in contrast to her opponent’s 10.

The 18-year-old lefty had reached only as far as the second round on her U.S. Open debut last year. She will be desperate to go a step ahead this time around.

In a one-hour-and-42-minute first-round contest, Fernandez was first to lose serve in the opening set. She would later save two set points to stay in the set and then close it out in the tiebreak. With a one-set-to-love lead, Fernandez dominated the second, racing to a 4-0 lead before eventually winning the one-sided affair.

The last two years have been pretty good for the World No. 73. She was a finalist in Acapulco last year and won the title in Monterrey this year.
