Garbine Muguruza v Andrea Petkovic Head to Head

Petkovic has a 3-0 record against the Spaniard, winning in Luxembourg in 2012, Sofia in 2014 and Doha in 2016.

Muguruza Holds Off Vekic

Vekic wasn’t going out without a fight and she didn’t give up till the end, but it was Mugruza’s experience that prevailed at last. The World No. 10 and two time Grand Slam champion needed two hours and 19 minutes to dispatch the 2019 quarterfinalist 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).

Muguruza was a break down early in the first but she fought back with two back to back games to draw level.

In the second, the Spaniard got an early break and protected it for long, but couldn’t close out the match at 5-3 as it was Vekic’s turn to come back. But the Croatian once again couldn’t match the former No. 1’s level in the tiebreaker.

The U.S. Open remains the only major where Muguruza hasn’t reached the quarterfinals. She made it to the fourth round in 2017 and that still remains her best. She was in terrific form in the first quarter this year, winning the Dubai crown and finishing runner-up at the Yarra Valley Classic and Doha.

Petkovic Knocks Out Begu

A resurgent Andrea Petkovic just continues to deliver the goods. The German, who reached a first final in six years in Hamburg recently and won a title in Cluj Napoca earlier this month, began her U.S. Open campaign with a straight sets win over Irina-Camelia Begu.

She was on the ascendency from the start, breaking the Romanian four times while getting broken twice to take the set 6-2. The second set was a much closer one though, with both players trading two breaks each and taking the set to a tiebreaker.

Petkovic dominated the tiebreak taking a 4-0 lead. Begu came back with three points in a row, but the German closed out the contest by wining the next three and taking the match 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

A quarterfinalist in 2011, the 33-year-old is also a former French Open semifinalist. Ranked 68th in the world, the former top 10 player, will be hoping to keep her unblemished record against Muguruza intact.
