Cristian Garin v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head

Garin and Laaksonen have been involved in two career, head-to-head clashes till date, with both having one win apiece. Their last meeting came in the quarter-finals of the Houston clay court championships in 2019, with the Chilean prevailing over the Swiss in straight sets.

Garin Beats Gombos in Round 1

Possibly weighed down by the heavy trolling back home following his announcement via social media during the Wimbledon Championships that he won’t travel to Tokyo Olympics, Garin followed up on his last-16 finish at All England with a run of humble results at subsequent events.

Kicking off the North American hard-court leg at the Canadian Open, the World No. 19 Chilean went down fighting to big-serving American John Isner in the opening round.

Though the Garin raised hopes of making the last 16 after taking the opening set 6-4, he fell away and yielded ground to the American, who, buoyed by his win in the second, cantered home in three sets.

If there were moments in the Isner match that he could draw some measure of solace from, Garin fared even worse at the Cincinnati Masters, going out in the opening round itself after losing to a relative lightweight opponent in American Tommy Paul.

In a repeat of his loss to Isner in Toronto, the Chilean won the opening set against Paul at the Masters before he lost his way rather inexplicably to go down in three.

Even his first-round clash at the US Open against Slovakian Norbert Gombos threatened to pan out similarly, as Garin took the opening set only to see his opponent fight his way back to win the second.

This time, however, the Chilean managed to roar back in contention, blitzing the third set and winning the fourth in a tiebreak.

He faces another tricky test against resurgent Swiss star Henri Laaksonen, who  cleared the qualifying hurdles and opened his Slam campaign with a fighting win over veteran Australian John Millman.

Laaksonen Fights Past Millman

Coming into the US Open on the back of a quarter-final finish at the Swedish Open, his last Tour event, the 130th-ranked Laaksonen drew vastly experienced Australian John Millman in the opening round.

Despite being challenged by the Aussie, especially in the first two sets, the Swiss held his nerve to get over the line in the end.

The first two sets saw both going hard at each other. Both the sets went to tiebreaks where the Swiss pipped him after close fights. In the third, however, Laaksonen raised his game by a fair few notches to close out a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 win.

However, in Cristian Garin in the second round, he faces a much superior, albeit not in top form at the minute. But the Chilean is skilled enough to dig deep and eke out wins even when his confidence is at a low ebb.

Garin v Laaksonen Prediction and Tip

In terms of ranking, Laaksonen is nowhere near Garin. But on the evidence of his qualifying campaign and first-round win, the Swiss will be a handful if he can bring the same fearless approach against the Chilean.
