Aryna Sabalenka v Tamara Zidansek Head to Head

Sabalenka leads 1-0 in tour level meetings. That win over Zidansek came in 2019 on the grass courts of Eastbourne.

Sabalenka Avoids Early Upset

Having surged past Naomi Osaka in the world rankings in the past week, Aryna Sabalenka almost made a melee of her opening round match on Monday.

Sabalenka, the number two seed, was playing the unseeded Serbian Nina Stojanovic on Louis Armstrong Stadium. The hardworking Stojanovic had lost all previous five meetings to Sabalenka on the ITF level.

But in their first Grand Slam meeting, the much-fancied Sabalenka stuttered as she clinched a 6-4 6-7 6-0 victory in two hours and 24 minutes.

The Belarusian power-hitting came racing out of the blocks as she stormed to take a 4-1 lead. She did experience a few jitters at 4-2 when she hit back-to-back double-faults to get broken but regained her momentum to take the first set 6-4 against the run of play.

Stojanovic shocked the world when she stole the second set in a tiebreak. However, once the six-footer from Belarus shifted into another gear, she was simply unplayable and served her way into the second round.

Zidansek Stuns Pera

Known for her counterpunching skills on a clay court, Tamara Zidansek gave a telling reminder that she can still grind it out on any surface on Monday.

The Slovenian who reached this year’s French Open semifinals produced a gutsy straight-sets win over Bernarda Pera to reach the US Open second round at the third time of asking.

Zidansek had lost in the first round in two previous visits to New York (2018 & 2019), and had elected not to play last year’s event in order to focus for the autumnal Roland Garros.

This time there was no denying she was bound to break her duck. And against an inconsistent Pera, she managed to keep her error’s count as low as possible.

Pera was wildly out of sorts on serve, producing a whopping seven double faults and winning just 32% of second serve points. In contrast, Zidansek who fired less winners (16 to 25), won 46 out of 95 of receiving points. And decisively, she broke serve five times and had a better return on second-serve points won at 62%.

Sabalenka v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

Aryna Sabalenka cannot afford to put up another second-class performance particularly against a rapidly improving Zidansek. But considering that Pera managed to breach the Slovenian’s defenses (firing 25 winners) with ease, Sabalenka should be adept to do even better.
