Taylor Fritz v Jenson Brooksby Head to Head

Fritz and Brooksby have never been involved in a head-to-head clash till date. However, with both through to the second round of the US Open, fans can expect an absorbing battle in their first-ever match against each other.

Fritz Overcomes de Minaur in Opener

Barring two semifinal finishes at Los Cabos and Atlanta, Fritz fell short of meeting his expectations from the North American hard-court leg.

Currently ranked 42nd in singles, the American followed up his Atlanta showing with three, back-to-back opening-round defeats at Washington Open, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters.

Coming into his home Grand Slam after a morale-sapping, three-set defeat to Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, Fritz was drawn to face skilled Australian Alex de Minaur in the first round.

As was predicted in a match between two feisty, young characters, there wasn’t much to separate Fritz from de Minaur in the opening set, which went to a tiebreak.

However, the American pipped the Australian in the tiebreak to go a set up. Bursting with momentum, Fritz stepped on the gas in the second and was duly rewarded as he routed the fleet-footed Aussie to go two sets to the good.

With the first two sets not going his way, de Minaur found a higher gear in the third and overwhelmed Fritz to take the match to a fourth set.

The American, however, had the measure of the Aussie again in the fourth set to eventually close out a deserved win. In the second round, he faces a tricky opponent in compatriot Jenson Brooksby.

Brooksby had a dream run at Washington Open as, coming into the tournament as an underdog, the 20-year-old reached the semifinals where he fell to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

Now ranked just inside the top-100 in singles, Brooksby won’t be easy hurdle to cross in his quest to ensure passage to the third round.

Brooksby Beats Ymer to Make Round Two

Coming into the US Open after an opening-round loss to hard-hitting Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, Brooksby was drawn to face Mikael Ymer of Sweden in the first round.

With the home crowd firmly behind, the 20-year-old American managed to quell the Swedish challenge but not before being put through a stern test. Brooksby took the opening set 7-5 and stepped up a gear to flatten the Swede in the second, winning it by an even more comfortable margin of 6-2.

However, the Swede rolled up his sleeves and showed the will to fight in the third set, winning it 7-5 and taking the match to a fourth.

Showing a calm head on his young shoulders, the American fought back and triumphed 6-3 in the fourth to set up a second-round showdown with higher-ranked countrymate Fritz.

While he has never played the fellow American before, Brooksby has a fight on his hands if Fritz’s demolition of de Minaur was any indication.

Fritz v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

While they haven’t featured in a head-to-head clash before, Fritz’s dominant win over de Minaur in his tournament opener will put him at a slight advantage over Brooksby in this second-round duel.
